Join us on a guided Kayak tour on modern sit on top plastic kayaks up the Knysna river.

We start the adventure trip on the banks of the Knysna river at the head of the Knysna estuary. The first section is a tidal section of the estuary where make our way past high sandstone cliffs and large banks of river boulders. On our path we will cross a weir which pools the river into a large impressive dam area. From here we make our way up the river through narrow sections and winding paths to discover large hidden pools surrounded by indigenous forests and high river gorges. We paddle up stream from pool to pool separated by very small rapid sections.

This river above the weir is off the beaten path with very few visitors except the occasional, vervet monkeys, baboons, mongoose or a possible shy bushbuck. There many birds species which you may catch a glimpse of including the Knysna Loerie, the Fish Eagle, Narina Trogen, kingfishers, comorants and many more. Experience a tranquil peaceful feeling whilst we edge further and further up the river into the forest.

The Knysna River is a magical river system which feeds the 24km long Knysna Estuary. The Knysna River catchment area drains off the Knysna forest and Sandstone rock. This water is fresh and clean and even drinkable but is stained a dark cola colour by the tanins from the decomposing matter on the forest floor.

The Knysna forest is a ancient magical growth consisting of many indigenous trees including the massive Outeniqua Yellowwood trees which pierce through canopies. The Kayak trip is an excellent way to get a good view of what these forests have to offer.

What to bring:

  • shoes to walk in the water
  • shorts
  • costume
  • towel
  • long sleeve shirt for the sun
  • hat
  • camera - We provided containers to carry your camera)
  • fleece just in case

Kayaks:

We use sit on top double plastic kayaks. These kayaks have replaced the canoes we have traditionally used on this river. In the event of a capsize they are easy right and do not fill up with water. They are easy to carry over the weir and in low water days we may need to carry them over a few rocky sections. Kayaks are rowed using double paddles. The kayaks have port holes for storage of small items and have straps for fastening dry bags or containers.

Life jackets:

These are issued for safety reasons. Although most of the river is fairly shallow they serve their purpose in the event of accidents. Please be aware that we will insist on them been worn.

How to get there:

The kayaking is situated in a convenient location to be accessed from Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, Sedgefield and Wilderness.

From Knysna take the N2 going to Buffalo Bay/Sedgefield/Wilderness. Once you have crossed the Lagoon turn right right onto the Phantom Pass Road. This becomes a gravel road which runs parralel to the Knysna River, follow it until you reach a turning onto a farm track to the right indicated by a large Gum Tree. If you the road suddenly veres left up the hill past Charlesford farm on the right you have just missed the turning. Follow the farm track for only 25 metres where you will turn left through a opening in the fence.

Weather conditions:

One of the great advantages of this adventure is that it is suitable in most weather conditions except heavy rainy downpours. Hot sunny days are perfect to meander along with occasionally taking a dip. It is also a perfect outdoor activity on windy days. Kayaking on the open lagoon with wind can be challenging but at the Knysna River it is narrow and winding which shelters it from the prevailing wind, one may have a few light gusts where elsewhere in Knysna the wind may be howling.
